I just got one at a Homedepot, and thought I would ask anyone if they ever got one. It looks like a 6 pinner but I cound be wrong.

Never heard of it but I'm sure it's another Kwikset or Schlage knockoff.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

that's what i always used to do
but then, a few days ago..
i was taking apart one my newly-bought cylinder,
i was shocked and angry to find out its only got 4 pins!

and the key had 5 notches
there was even an extra chamber for a fifth pin...

and yet, it's a 4 pin tumbler

does this happen alot?
since then i always physically count the pins with a pick...

The Kwikset that was in my house when it was built (and I'm assuming all the houses in my neihborhood as well) only had 4 pins (pin stacks) - the key was cut to 5. Pretty weird considering Kwiksets are pinned with 5 pins when you buy them.

Hm, that's odd having the extra cut like that. The locks probably have some kind of histories.
American brand padlocks come new with 6-pin cylinders but some models are only loaded with 5 pins. They have separate 5 and 6 pin key blanks, though.

I don't know about kwiksets but with mortise and rim cylinders, it's very common for them to be drilled for 6 pin stacks but to only be keyed with 5. Of course they would come with a 5 pin key, not a 6. Once in a while, you come across a cylinder that was drilled for 7 pins and only 5 or 6 stacks were used.
