Mountain Security Padlock Problems

Postby PhR33k » 10 Jan 2008 23:38

Ok well, I picked my first lock recently. A little $3 Lockage brass padlock.

So I got these pair of Mountain Security padlocks for $7 at Wal-Mart.

Im having real difficulty opening it though, I do know though that you need to turn it rather hard with the key in for it to unlock, if thats any hint.

So, are there any tricks or techniques used to open this lock?

Thnaks!

It will require a very very precise tension to pick. You have to overcome that "sticking" force, but not overcome the tension of the binding pins. If you do that, then you wont be able to move the pins upward.

I'm having trouble with the same lock. I bought it at wal-mart and it looked cheep so i figured it'd be easy. I haven't gotten it once yet. not even by sheer luck...

Could you guys post some pictures? Are you sure it isn't a warded padlock?

I bought three locks last night at Wallmart.

(1) Mountain Security 1 9/16" Laminated Steel (202-40011)
(2) Mountain Security 1 9/16" Solid Bradd (201-40001)
(3) Brinks Max Security Solid Brass (101-50001)
The ###-##### is the product code in the upper left corner of the packaging.

I have yet to get the warded Mountain Security steel lock open. I don't have any warded picks though so, that doesn't bother me.

The Mountain Security brass lock was the first I opened. It was a difficult lock to pick and I will tell you it gets harder every time. I think I might have damaged it applying too much force on the tension wrench. It does require more than one would imagine. I have opened it about 10-15 times though. I'm going to have to buy another one (or exchange this one  ) and find out if I hosed it with too much torque.

The Brinks was amazingly simple to open - The FIRST time. I've popped it a few more times, maybe five to total but, I think I might have over torqued it too using too much pressure. I caught myself so engrossed in getting it open that my wrench hand was cramping from holding so much tension and litterally forcing the mis-alligned pins past the bind.

I will say that believe it or not, the Brinks that I know has at least one security pin was easier to open than the Mountain Security that I don't think has any. :? Go figure, eh?

It has been about 10 years since I had picked anything. For some reason, I just got the urge again so, I got out my trusty SouthOrd 5-piece (once I finally found it). I actually made a tension wrench and short hook out of the ear pieces of some old wire eyeglasses first. :D They work amazingly well against locks that they fit into. They're a bit big for these little padlocks though.

Maybe someone can fill us in on the possibility of damaging the lock to the point that they can't be picked but the key still works by using too much tension.

OK. I finally got the feel of the Mountain Security 201-40001. I can pop it in about 3 seconds now using light to medium tension and a short hook. The trick is getting a good false set. After that, on my lock at least, after the false set, you can SPP from back to front afterwards and the lock will pop right open.

I haven't raked it yet but, that would probably work too. I'm still concentrating on learning how this lock wants to be treated specifically so I can repeat the 3-second open over and over again. After that, I'll experiment with raking to see if it is even faster.

Greetings from a frustrated lock-picker. I hope someone offer some advice.

The Mountain Security 201-40001 that is pictured above is giving me fits today. I got it twice - in rapid succession - but, for the life of me, it seemed like it took a TON of tension before I could feel anything.

The lock is not "stiff" with the key so, I don't think it's tightening up or anything. I just can't seem to "feel" the lock. Maybe I've been playing with the Masters too much. I'd have to be dead to not feel and hear those things screaming "you just set that pin".

Tonight, (last night) one time I picked the 201-40001, I could feel the serrations in one of the security pins as I picked it. I could also feel the tension wrench push back slightly as I set another of the security pins. I pop the lock, feel all good and then, it's like I'm numb and deaf. I get no response - audible, feedback on the tension wrench, all pins feel either loose or stiff (depending on tension).

Am I just picking too long or is this lock just very finicky?
