This is why as a general rule, you want to make sure that people don't try to pick locks that are in use. There is always the potential of the lock breaking even if you are using the right key. If this is the case, you might need to replace the lock anyway. To everyone else, this is why they tell you NOT to use a lock that's in use as a practice lock.

If the cylinder just turns but the lock does not unlock most likely the tailpiece on the back of the cylinder is either broke or has come unhooked.

Why? Why do you have to bring this up? Did he say anywhere that he was trying to pick it? It sounds like the lock just broke. If you want to remind everyone so much "not to pick locks that are not in use" even if the topic has nothing to do with it, then why don't you put it in your signature or somthing.

Ah, one question for you... is this a bicycle lock with key something like this:

http://www.kneedraggers.com/image_stora ... _rough.jpg

If so, many of those disc locks will let you turn the key while it's partially inserted -- and if you do this, the key will turn 90° but the lock will not open... and it could very easily seem like it's broken. (I had one once that was, I think, assembled with poor tolerances that behaved like that quite regularly.) If that's the case, my advice would be to flush the lock out, to remove any grit that's accumulated while you've been riding your bike around, and make sure that you're pushing the key in all the way before turning.

This may not be your problem at all, but I just thought that I'd throw that out there... :)

Oops, I misread this. I thought he said that he thought someone was trying to do something to it and possibly broke it. My bad. Yeah, to me, it sounds like the piece in the back that connects the plug to the rest of the lock that moves the actual bolt. Sorry, I don't know the name of the specific part.
Sorry about the confusion folks. I misread the original question.
