Review: Bilock

Postby digital_blue » 31 Jan 2008 20:47

So... it's been some time now since I installed the Bilocks on my house and I figured it's high time I write up a little blurb on the locks.

I'll start with my likes (mostly 'cause that's the longer list)...

Right out of the box I liked the look of these things simply because of the unique keyway. You just don't see a lock that looks like this very often around my area so it's got that cool "geek" appeal.

The next thing I did after taking them out of the box and admiring the keyway was (.. wait for it..) try to pick 'em. :) Now, I gotta tell ya, there are members on this site that are FAR better lock pickers than me, and I've never had a lot of luck with any high security lock. So, as pretty much expected, these things thwarted me in my picking attempts. Now, granted, I really only spent about 45 minutes on them, but I was getting nowhere with 'em. Eventually, I decided I didn't want to pick the crap out of them since they were going into real-world use on my house, so I abandoned that little project content that even your moderately-better-than-average lock picker would not be successful with a conventional picking attempt in any reasonable amount of time.

The third thing I like is the key. Two reasons for that: Cool looking key, and key control. I like that you can't get keys duplicated (like just about any high security lock). At some point my current house will end up being a rental property and I kinda dig the idea of key control. And for the mean time, I have the coolest looking house key on my block and that suits me just fine.

Overall, these locks seem to be pretty solid, and well worth the money.

My only gripe: Inserting the key in the dark is a near-impossibility. Unlike the crappy Kwikset knockoffs I had on the house before (which had a bevelled surround on the keyway), with the Bilock you basically have to have the key lined up perfectly in order to insert it. With a handful of stuff and a puppy under one arm, in the dark, getting the key in can be a bit of a nightmare. It's a small gripe, but it would be nice if it wasn't such a challenge. It also took a little getting used to to have to give the key that little extra push in before turning, but I've long since forgotten about that and don't even notice that "problem" anymore.

Anyway... that's my thoughts on my Bilock locks.

Cheers,

db

Discussions were held many years ago at ALC about the issue you describe (gripe).

Attempts were made to produce a keyway insert with a dimple to allow easier key entry.....but from what I remember, it was not very successful and not able to be implemented to the degree that would be marketable.

ALC is unique in that it attempts to accomodate concerns of both the industry and the marketplace in producing and improving the qualities of their products offerings.

I am not affiliated with ALC in any form, therefore am not speaking from a biased stance.

ALC are also the company behind Binary Plus also.

A wise man named Zeke79 once said "For guys like us a cool looking key is more important than a big, well you know. I'm betting it's a word the language filter would grab.

cost of bilock?

Postby gostone » 1 Feb 2008 21:45

Hey Josh,

How much did the Bilock run you, and where did you source it? Are there any suppliers in Canada?
