Can't "unpick" my lock - need help

Postby calypso » 1 Jun 2004 20:21

Hi!

I'm in sort of a desperate situation. I picked the deadbolt to my front door, except, I forgot that locks that take a half-turn often have a safety pin that drops into place if you don't secure it. The end result is, my key no longer works. So, I need to know if there is any way to fix the situation. I can pick the lock again, and the key seems to go in until the very last pin, then "sticks". I can force it in, but it won't turn. Any help would be appreciated.

Incidentally, this was my first success too. I can pick it in under a minute every time now... which is cool, but now I feel pretty insecure. I mean, that's not much protection. Too bad it was spoiled by this problem!

Close, and lock the door behind you.

Lean hard on the door. If the door moves, the frame flexes, or worse yet the whole thing pops open, the lock is the least of your worries.

How so? I mean, first of all I *can't* lock it behind me. That's the problem, the lock is broken, my key doesn't work anymore.

Problem pins

Can you pick the lock into the locked position?

I had this problem once, and as soon as I relocked the door, the key worked again.

Oh, and I was commenting about your feeling less secure. Sorry about that.

Ooh, okay. I'll try that. Yeah, the door is pretty cheesy, but I think, especially where I live (an apartment), someone busting down or jimmying the door would get some serious attention.

perhaps the usual thing of the driver slipping slightly into the keyway has
happened. try pushing the flat side of your pick up against the drivers and
rotate the lock.

usually it doesn't prevent it from re-locking, but it could - alternatively if
it's masterkeyed then there could be a problem with a master pin but
that's apparently a rare thing... whatever you do, try not to force the key
in if the lock is not in it's upright position - you may end up breaking the
key pins. theoretically, if the lock is in the unlocked state, you shouldn't
be able to get the key in at all unless the bitings are in assending length
(i.e. the longest at the back and the shortest at the front)

other than that - shame on you for practicing picking on a lock that is
actually being used for security - go out and buy yourself a practice
cylinder or padlock! :)

You could always try to take the lock apart. Read up on re-pinning or re-keying. You can stuff the lock but of course there can be worst things. Try putting the pick in pressing the first pins up, then the second then the third and so forth. Probably wont move but it is worth a try. Then you can just try to see if there is any more/less movement with the last pin.
Consider me inactive or lurker.

The fact that it is in an apartment building suggests that it may be a masterkeyed lock, so a problem with a masterpin may be occuring. Maby a problem with a spring as well?

bottom line: if you don't know what you're doing, call a locksmith.

sometimes apartments have two sets of keys

1st is builders key
2nd home owners key

the builders key is for while the place is getting built when it is
finished the home owner inserts his key rolls it around and now the
builder key no longer works.

How does this happen? the builders key is similar to the home owners key except by two cuts - which are deeper. The bottom pins are stacked with a little ball bearing on top. Inserting the home owners key pushes up the ball bearing and sits in the top chamber. Rolling the key places it in a little hole milled to the side of the plug. This hole is to small for a top pin to fall into
