What does this key go to?

Postby Legion303 » 20 Apr 2008 22:03

I have a key labeled "SCHLAGE" that looks nothing like the other Schlage profiles I'm familiar with, but looks exactly like the "B4" blank on this page:

It has "W132724" stamped on the back (serial doesn't correspond with cuts). The cuts are asymmetrical, 2 on one side and 3 on the other. Other than the weird profile, the cuts look like standard "flattened V" key machine cuts. Any ideas?

I believe that is for a Schlage wafer lock. They don't make them anymore, the lock anyways. Lockpicks.com sells a very easy to use pick tool for that lock.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Schlage also has some fancy head keys for locks on higher end storm doors. They are SC1 keyway, but you will never know it from the bow of the key.

That's right, they don't make them anymore but you do occasionally run across them on older buildings. Weren't very secure because it basically works on a binary wafer system, 1 or 0, not with individual depths like on normal 'wafer' locks.

Easily raked open with normal tools, if it's like the few that i've come across in my travels. Can you show us a pic? I didn't know about the 1 or 0 thing. (Never occurred to me to inspect the keys closely... :/)

Well I'll be, it does only have one depth (two if you count 0 cuts).

But if it's an asymmetrical wafer system then it's not really binary, but has 4 different wafers, correct?

i.e., (0 top, 0 bottom), (1 top, 0 bottom), (0 top, 1 bottom), (1 top, 1 bottom).

yep, one depth

Postby raimundo » 21 Apr 2008 7:54

yep, it only has one depth, the key is hard to fit in a copier jaw, because schlage was selling a key punch for them.

get a piece of streetsweeper bristle and cut a half diamond pik on both ends then twist the ends so that a part as long as the key blade is the shaft on both ends then bend the middle part like a hairpin so that both halfdiamond ends are pointing outwards like the edges of the key, place the half diamonds so that one is forward of the other by about a single cut on the key length, then put this thing in and a tensor and it will easily open the lock, if you have trouble sand the pick so it moves easily.

one more thing

the key blanks are not milled but stamped, and there are two different keyways.
