True, I actualy got 4 rim cylinders, 2 ovals and two euros, and I'm going to have to get my head around what your saying, you can move the plug with the sidebar engaged? or that I can lift all of the pins with a shim and then deal with the sidebar? Thanks

If the ASSA opens like mine, you can shim from the back without worrying about the sidebar, as the groove in the shell extends all the way through, so the plug can be slid forwards without the sidebar retracting.

That means you can shim it open and push in a plug follower and the plug will come out, for repinning and stuff...but like said this cant be done while the lock is in a door or handle, and has nothing to do with defeating the sidebar so it shouldn't be advanced IMO because the lock is in your hand when you do it.

You can move the plug with the sidebar engaged, but only once you've removed the circlip, and only forwards, you can't rotate the plug without dealing with the sidebar.

If you shim it open the sidebar pins won't be held in by anything and they will spring straight out the bottom of the cylinder. Just make sure you're expecting it and you push the cylinder out slowly with your hand cupped underneath. I suggest disassembling it in a plastic bag for good measure, because you really don't want to lose the tiny sidebar pins and springs.

If your *very* careful as you slide it forward you can support the sidebar (which will spring out) with one finger, and the sidepins with another.

The plastic bag idea is a really good one, I've lost a good few pins and springs before using a bag.

looks as if the Assa cylinder is a 6000 profile, the earlier model. Any luck yet??
