Took apart a lock...need some help

Postby TheArtfullDodger » 19 May 2008 7:06

Hey everyone. I took apart my lock on my door to make a practice lock with less pins so I could go through those beginner tips but I ran into a little problem, I guess I wasn't careful enough when putting two of the springs in because now one of them is broken and I lost another one.

Everything else went well repined the 5 pin to a 3. I was just wondering if anyone here knew where I could find replacement springs or something I could use as one. Pen springs came to mind but I'm not sure if those would work any help is appreciated. =]

best bet would be to ask a locksmith for a few.

You can buy them online at many of the stores. Your best bet is to go to a locksmith shop and ask for a few. They will sell them for little cost. Picking a lock that you use is looked down on. You should never pick a lock in use.

This should be made a sticky titled What Not To Do! Using the lock on from your door for picking is not a good idea. Taking the lock apart when you are a beginner is a worse idea. Asking a locksmith is your best bet, or you could go buy a cheap lock and use those springs.

Oh sorry I came off as in I needed the lock. Haha it is my bedroom door lock I got it for 10 dollars my mom picked it up specifically for taking it apart x] I just need the springs for when I want to go 5 pin again =P Yeah I wouldn't take off a lock I am using. Thanks for the suggestions I am going to stop by a locksmith some time in the near future and try and get some.

This is a hint I Pick up on this site. Once you've drilled the pin holding the springs out, tilt the lock in a see thru plastic bag. This way if the springs go awol, which it will, you'll have them in one packet. I sometimes do this to all of the springs and pins if I have the time. This can then be marked as pin one etc.

I'm busy making a Cisa europrofile practise lock. When I'm done I'll post the pics.
