Rekeying door handles on lock display boards.

Postby hydruh » 30 Mar 2008 21:32

Alright, I have to brag. I know I don't have much cred yet, but I am proud of myself. I bought the lock display boards from an Ace hardware auction whilst they were closing. I took them apart, and made a very incredibly cool set of learning blocks.

Ok, maybe they aren't that innovative but for $60 I think not bad.

SO I rekeyed all of the deadbolts. Did you know that this cheap Ace deadbolt has TWO security pins? Anyway, that was a fun evenings work. This hobby rocks.

Now, I want to do the same thing with the door handles. However, I can't figure out how to rekey them. No keys of course, and I am assuming that without keys I am toast.

Anyway, I hope to use these for a locksport class for my martial arts group. I think they will be great teaching tools.

Any thoughts welcome.

You would think as a computer programmer I would think to go to the manufacturer web site first. Thanks for the suggestion.

Doornobs

Many of the kik type locks, (keyinknob) need special tools for disassembly, these tools often come in the box with the lock so a local locksmith near you probably has the tools as leftovers from his jobs and I bet he would sell them to you and even give you the info sheat that comes with the lock on how to use them. some are spanners, others are for spreading snaprings and such. I have a lot of them around and most I have completely forgot the particular use of. I don't do much with kik sets.

If they're schlage or schlage knockoffs they're really easy. Just unlock it (by picking if no keys) and turn the plug 90 degrees. Then press the little tab on the neck of the handle and pull the handle off. You'll have to use a pick or other small tool to compress the bible cover to get the cylinder out the back of the knob.

I need to find a local locksmith to suck up to. Surely we have one in Columbus somewhere ...

Excellent. Between that and the Kwikset manual, I am golden. Now to get started ...

You can get the Kwikset tool in a re-key kit from Home Depot. Here the kit is $9.99 and comes with two keys and enough pins to key 3 or 4 locks. Comes with a plug follower (cheap plastic but better than an improvised one), plastic tweezers and the Kwikset KIK tool.

For what you get and the lack of hassle and shipping charges it's not a bad deal.

schlage collapsable cores rocks for dissasembly.. but there a pain in the arse in cold weather lock outs

There a nice challenge, also some Yale KW1 locks utilize schalge's KIK design, pretty cool :)

If the latches on the knobsets are mortice type then the manufacturer should stamped into the surface. It looks like the top left one will rekey useing the same meathod as a Schlage, top right Kwickset, the bottom left I can not make out, the bottom right looks like it could be a Weiser although it isd hard to tell from the pic. I can identify the lock better with a pic of the lock removed from the display. From ther eI can give you specific instructions for that lock

I was going to start a new thread for this topic, but I'll just mooch of this thread. I came up with an idea similar to hydruh's. I finally got up the energy to go to my garage and make it. Here is my creation.

Image

I've got 4 deadbolts on the right, and the left is supposed to be for knobs, but I only have 3 spare knobs now so I threw a db on top. The two chains are for padlocks. As I open them, I'll move them down to the bottom. I've already opened half of them, but I'm just starting them all out on top. I'm pretty sure that it'll be a few months until I can move that American 5530 down.
