Brinks 2" 40mm help

Postby mischieftech » 18 Jul 2008 13:31

Ok, This is my first real post so I apologize if its in the wrong place. I also did a few searches and didn't find what i was looking for.

I'm very new to picking. Only been doing it about a week. I recently bought a Brink 2" 40mm lock to practice with. I have been able to pick it a few times virtually by accident. I have not been able to get it consistently. To day I managed to be able to consistently get a false set but the security pin keeps tricking me up. Every time I try to pick the last pin i manage to reset all of the other pins.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for this lock? It seems to me that the security pin is the last pin out of I think four pins. Could be wrong though.. I am pretty new.

I think you could benefit from this little discussion.

I realize you are looking for help with a specific lock, but you might not find it without doing some serious searching. I don't know if you are talking about the brass one, or the laminated steel one, but the techniques for getting past the spools are basically the same across the board. The only thing that changes is how tight the machining tolerances are on the lock you have and the difficulty of the key biting. Some other small things. There is a sticky with some breakdowns of lock pins in this very forum.

You might not have chosen the greatest handle/SN to post under. Mischieftech tells me that you might be up to mischief. I for one don't like to help people who are up to no good criminal BS. For the moment you sound on the level, so have fun and do some nosing around with the search function.

Thanks for the thread link.

As for my name.. I have been using this name for a handle for about 8 years. I got it from the car racing group known as Teckademics and their video series called "Mischief" video series about the actual Gumball Rally.

PS.

It is the solid brass 40mm lock that I am working with.

You're welcome :) There are dozens more threads discussing the exact topic you asked about. Forgive me for not hunting them down. They shouldn't be to hard for you to find though.

Didn't mean to give you unnecessary crap about your name, but you can see what kind of crowd the forums tend to attract. I might not be the last person you have to explain it too.

Your lock, well I don't remember if it is a 5 or 4 pin, but I know it has a spool or two. If you don't start to get the hang of popping it and get frustrated switch to a lock that doesn't have spools and such. Kwikset, Defiant, laminated MasterPadlocks. There are lots of threads about this too. Sounds like you have a pretty good handle on the one you have been working on. Remember even if you do unset all the pins by setting the last one you can still go back and set them again after you set the last one. I had a Master 140 I did like that until I found a better binding order. Good luck.

I think that I have picked the same lock that you are having trouble with. Here's the thread that I started with some info.

Here's a thread on the difference between picking spool pins and serrated pins

I hope this helps
