Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

So i bought some MasterLocks

Postby gr00ve » 24 Sep 2008 19:54

i got an 803D and a 141DLF i think?

anyhow, i got them open within minutes by just raking. i like how its advertised like ROAR HARDENED STEEL FOR MAXIMUM SECURITY, LAMINATED EXTERIOR!

honestly i gave one to my roommate and he opened it in a couple seconds lol.

anyway. so whats the next step here? just practice getting these open every time? try SPP? what else can i do?

The Master #3 is the least secure of the Master locks, which is the least secure brand in general. Good that you got it open though.

First, yes, try to pick it, not rake it. There are a lot of locks later down that road that you can't rake, and you need to learn feedback, which you don't with raking. Work through the tutorials written by the masters here next. Just start at the top and challenge yourself.

And good luck! This is a great hobby.

I know that hydruh technically included this in his post but the main tutorial that really helped me grasp picking was a beginners exercise authored by digital_blue, specifically: http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=10677.

I sincerely encourage to obtain a (cheap) Kwickset (replacement) deadbolt cylinder and take the time to work through this exercise. It really helps build a strong technical foundation for the beginning lock picker.

Have fun and good luck!

I've heard this said a lot, and it's made me curious. What specifically makes the Master #3 less secure than, say for example, the #1 or #5, given that all three use the same cylinder? It seems that all three locks would have the same (admittedly low) level of security, but I have read on this forum on more than one occasion that the #3 specifically is the least secure Master padlock. Why is that?

They are all the same cylinder and except for size, the same lock. I would imagine people find the 3 easiest because it is the smallest, so it's easier for someone with smaller hands to hold onto while picking.
