Master Lock Nightwatch and Abloy lockable thumbturn deadbolt

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Master Lock Nightwatch and Abloy lockable thumbturn deadbolt

Postby workstation » 15 Oct 2008 6:57

Master Lock make a deadbolt called the "Nightwatch". This is like a single cylinder deadbolt with the unusual feature that if after locking you pull back on the thumbturn, the lock will now no longer open from the outside even with the correct key until the feature is released with the thumbturn.

Abloy make "lockable thumbturn" deadbolts; these work normally like a single cylinder, but they have an extra cylinder inside the thumbturn, which, if you lock it, inactivates the thumbturn until you unlock it with the key. So they're normally like a single cylinder deadbolt, but you can use them as a double cylinder deadbolt if, for example, you are leaving the house unoccupied.

Does anyone know of any type of deadbolt that combines the features of both of these locks? I don't think there is one, but if there is, I imagine one of you knows of it.

Also, does anyone know of anything that provides either of these features (i.e. bolting from the inside, and lockable thumbturns) on multipoint euro locks (or similar)? I don't know whether it would be on the cylinder or on the boltwork/handle. I'm sure it must be possible to do at least the extra bolting just by adding to the interior handle a thumbturn that locks the handle itself like a bathroom privacy latch.

Thanks very much for any answers.

I believe mul-t-lock has a similar captive deadbolt product.

Isn't having both features almost redundant? Captive key is better than the nightwatch thing, someone can still break a window and remove the nightwatch, good luck unlocking an Abloy through a window without a key. ;) Besides the captive key deadbolts made by Medeco, Abloy, Mul-T-Lock, etc are much higher quality than the master lock.

We had a guy here a few months ago who was promoting a lock similar to the Masterlock Nightwatch. I remember laughing as the members ripped him (and his lock) to shreds. Don't buy the Nightwatch. Ever.

Thanks for the replies, guys. :)

SafetyOff:

I am aware of captive key deadbolts. As I understand it this functionality is what the abloy lockable thumbturns have. I just think lockable thumbturns are a more elegant solution than having a component that comes off the lock (that one could potentially lose). Although I see that the captive key gives a visual indication of the mode, which is good.

I don't see how having both features is redundant at all. Can you explain why you think it is?

The Nightwatch thing is about preventing entry by people with the key. You could just fit another bolt on the inside of course, but the Nightwatch solution seems more elegant and also to be extensible as a concept to multipoint locking.

The lockable thumbturn/captive key thing is about preventing exit without the key, or reaching through broken glass etc. It's a different issue.

I would like to read that thread you mention. Can you post a link to it or a search term so I can find it?

What specifically is wrong with the Nightwatch? It seems to be better than the equivalent standard single cylinder, at least?
