New Yale P125 padlock, picked

Postby Olson Burry » 19 Dec 2008 18:18

Bought as new padlock today, it is a Yale P125 and it completely dwarfs my other locks, this thing seems massive! And heavy.

It was £7.99.

The main reason I chose this one though out of all of them was the key bitting. It was the one with the most high/low extremes I could find. This, I thought, was a mistake when I got it home and tried to pick it for half an hour.

Image

It turned out I needed a beer and a smaller half diamond, also to chill out a bit as I'd been running around like a mad thing doing Christmas things.

I'd made a small thin diamond a while a go so I thought I'd give it a try, here it is pictured with a slimline SO. I use diamonds for SPP only, I recently learnt to jiggle around with a bogota but that's about it.

And a few minutes later... woo :)

One of the main problems I had was the small keyway, also that the keyway can move forwards and backwards. It doesn't affect the setting of the pins but it is quite an odd feeling.

Image

I tried top tension and using a hook but I just couldn't get past the warding and push the pins high enough, I need some serious practice at that. Being left handed and putting the top tension facing left so I can see what I'm doing means I have to tension upwards and twist my arms around and turning the lock upside down to maintain downward pressure and comfort is strange for me.

The pins being bevelled helped me use the diamond resting on the first ward a bit because travelling along the edge of the pins meant it didn't lift the low ones too high.

Also when I stopped treating it as something new and exciting and just another lock, that helped a lot too.

Now if only I could open my Chubb lock I bought a few months ago. I still haven't managed it and it's the only lock so far that has beaten me!

Just thought I'd share, hope that's OK!

All the best.

Thanks!

It really is a difficult pick. I've got it down to around a minute now but each pin wants to turn the plug back dropping the rest and getting under the really low ones is a pain! I haven't yet deciphered the proper picking order.

I've only seen this type of moveable plug in some master locks. Is it common? There is no screw or anything indicating the plug can be removed when the shackle is released, would there be a trick to taking a look inside?

Just curious, did you notice any security pins in the lock while picking it? I'm wondering what a "6" on their 1-10 security scale implies. That's a nice looking shackle, but otherwise it doesn't appear to be all that dissimilar to a Master laminated padlock (though I'm sure the cylinder is better made).

Yeah the shackle is massive! Thing is that heavy I'm reconsidering whether to stick it in my bag for when I'm away on top of everything else that has to go in there.

I think it is very much like a master except the keyway is a bit more paracentric and narrow.

And yes, mmmm mushrooms :) probably three. It makes it so I have to pick it twice really, no big deal but there is a very noticeable turn back with the plug when setting a few of the pins, much more so than with the spools I've had experience with.

Only way to tell for sure I suppose would be to take it apart but I can't see and easy way of doing that.

Happy daze, happy pickin'

looking at the key bitting, I think I could shake that open in under a minute with a bogota 8)

hah! With your Bogatas Rai, anything is possible ;)

It does just kind of look the right shape doesn't it? I bought it as an SPP challenge.

I think you'd need pretty small Boga though.. Something to try when I get back.

Have a good Christmas if you do that kind of thing!
