Disassembly help.

Postby Major Boothroyd » 9 Dec 2008 14:48

I up big time

So I got one of the plugs out with absolutely no problems and took the pins and springs out and thought I'd do the same for the other, everything's going as planned and then the third pin gets stuck in the hole I've shown in the picture. I don't know what to do, feels like only the small pin's stuck so it's only a millimeter or two inside, but I just can't get it out. Tried shimming it but nothing. :(

Help much appreciated, and I'd really like to not have to drill or destroy the lock.

You've got a pin stuck in the side pin holes of the core. *Never* rotate a MTL core 90 degrees for removal - always go for 45 degrees, or this happens.

Apparently it is possible to bump the pin down and free the core, but I've spent far too long bashing the lock against my desk trying to achieve this, and never seen it work. You may also be able to get a very deep hook pick to push the pin out of the core and rotate it slightly, or make up a special tool out of some bent wire.

I've heard of that happening before, what's that hole used for?

I've never actually seen the holes in use, but my understanding is they're for side cuts and/or construction keying. The MTL machines at my work have the option to grip the key so as to cut dimples in the side (not the face) of the blank.

Agh, ended up taking a pair of pliers to it and ruining 2 of the driver pins. Not Good. Already stopped by two locksmiths and they don't seem to have em or want to sell them (or only 2 of them), oh well, gonna be on the lookout for old Mul-T-Locks I guess.

I'm pretty sure I have a couple pf MTL drivers in my bits-n-pieces pot. Shoot me a PM and I can stick some in the post to you.
