Tri-circle 265... I need to vent!

Postby Solomon » 8 May 2009 17:38

This little thing is doing my head in. What's the deal with these locks? From what I can tell it's a 6 pin, and I doubt it has any security pins in it. I've tried SPP, raking, reverse picking and out of curiosity I even tried rapping... alas, this thing just won't open.

The plug gives a bit of resistance when you turn it with the key, so I know I should be using more torque than usual... I just can't seem to figure out the right amount. My usual trick of oversetting all the pins, counting the clicks and applying just enough torque to get the first one set is fine... but I can't get any pins setting properly after that. I've tried upping the torque very slightly and going over the other pins, and repeating that process, which usually works like a charm, but this thing is just too stiff for that to really work properly. :(

The only explanation I can come up with is that it's almost brand new and the tolerances are very low... that, coupled with the fact that I can't vary the torque by tiny amounts because of the stiffness of the plug, is making this thing a bit of a nightmare. I think I need to lube it or something, but I haven't got anything handy lying around.

Anyone else had similar problems with these locks (or any other padlocks, for that matter)?

Lol, I have two of those locks, and made a cutaway of one of them to use as a practice lock... Why? Because it has 6 mushroom pins! So while easy to bypass, amazingly they've made it very made to pick them. I've heard the amount of mushroom pins can vary, by the way.
Did you try smurfing it?

Well, that'd certainly add to my problems. Can you disassemble these? I wouldn't mind taking a look inside.

On my own lock I also removed the retainer pin that's in the seventh hole, so I could remove the plug and make a cutaway, but it's tough work; had to completely drill the retainer pin out.

You don't need to drill it out entirely ;)

You should be able to drill that pin with a press though. Just make sure to dimple the surface so the bit doesn't walk because you need it _precise_ to grab the most material.

Snowy - correct me if I'm wrong. :)

Yeah but I'm using a slot cutter, so I don't need to centre punch it. :)

That GEGE you saw on Ebay is availble for sale by the way. Let me know if you still want it.

Sent you email... :) I know you're using a mill, I was just pointing out that Solomon should be able to get that much of the job done with a press. The mill is always the better choice though. :)
