Unbranded combination lock

Postby Solomon » 17 May 2009 11:37

Hey guys, I've had this thing for years and found it while going through some stuff earlier. I can't remember the combination, but I imagine it can be shimmed pretty easily. I'll get around to making a shim for it later, my question is about setting a new combo. Once it's unlocked, do I just rotate the dial fully a couple of times to reset the wheels then enter a new one or what? The face presses in slightly so I dunno if I have to hold that in for anything. These little guys aren't exactly my strongest area, as I'm sure you can tell. :P

Hey,

I think you cannot change the combo unless you have a dedicated keyhole at the rear of the lock. But these locks have commonly an unchangable combo.
Sorry ;)

I don't know if finding the combo for such lock can be discussed in public, but it might be possible once it's shimed.

Good Luck

Nah, no keyhole at the back. I don't see the point in having a combination which can't be changed, but oh well. Maybe I'll get a stethoscope and figure it out. ;)

Two reasons for unchangeable combinations:
1) it's cheap to manufacture
2) you can keep a database of serial number versus combination for "recovery" purposes. organizations like schools love this.

Here is one of mine, taken apart :

You can see that the Gates (in blue) and the notches (in red) are fixed, so no possible change of the combo.

On some well-branded ones, you can change it (S&G for example).

Yup, no changing the combo on that.

It will fall to any of the tricks for Master Locks. There is plenty of information out there.
