"Ideal" and Yale deadbolt info?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

"Ideal" and Yale deadbolt info?

Postby Peter Martin » 26 Aug 2005 10:06

I came across an "Ideal" brand deadbolt yesterda. It is already mounted on a advertising or mini demonstration door--which would make a great mount for practicing.
I've never heard of this brand before--but presume it's make by another company and marketed under this tradename.

At the same surplus store I came across an old (25-30 years?) Yale deadbolt. Does Yale still make these? The keyway looked unfamiliar and looking into the keyway, the pins look fat--wider than standard Kwikset/Schlage pins. But maybe this was an optical illusion because I was excited seeing so many surplus locks in one place...

If anyone has info on these two locks, let me know... I just haven't seen either of these two cylinder locks being sold in stores anywhere.

Yale locks...

Postby Peter Martin » 26 Aug 2005 10:19

I did find that Yale, of course, is still making cylindrical and mortise locksets. However, it appears that they dropped their line of deadbolts. Since this brand is not popular in this area, I may have to buy it, clean it up and give it a try!

By the way, here is the site for Yale products. It appears they only produce a limited line of cylindrical and mortise locks and now mainly concentrate on electronic access control.

Yale did (does?) produce a wide variety of locks including interchangeable cores, in a number of sectional keyways. I would look at www.jetkeys.com to see if any of the keyways are familiar. I have a few Yale locks that have seen extensive use, and the pins appear to be worn by this use to something that looks squarish when viewed from the front.

IDEAL SECURITY INC. LOCKS

Postby Peter Martin » 29 Aug 2005 14:06

After some research on what type of lock I was trying to pick... I found this information on Ideal Security Inc.--which is a Canadian company. They formerly manufactured locks called "Super Guard". They have not made this lock in over 20 years. The company makes only general security items--door viewers, patio locks, etc. They have no technical or service information pertaining to the Super Guard locks anymore. The only information about these is this short website.

Ideal Security locks

Postby Peter Martin » 29 Aug 2005 14:22

I searched a few other on-line sites for additonal information--since these locks are still encountered. Apparently they are very inexpensive/cheap locks made of pot-metal. Supposedly they are also ideantical to Craftsman locks. But I haven't seen a "Craftsman" brand lockset either.

I am aware that this thread is several years old and is worth a try, but any of you still see these locks around in you area or know of one of those mom and pop hardware stores that still has one around ?

I am interested in acquiring some for parts to service my 25+ year old SuperGuard that is slowly wearing out. These locks were nicely designed, but Ideal Security's use of zinc Zamac 3 for internal components means they wear out and break easily. Ideal Security is located in my home city, but they no longer provide parts or service for this line of locks.

If anyone sees or find any around, please message and I will gladly compensate you.
