What is a "keyed different" lock?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

What is a "keyed different" lock?

Postby subver » 24 Jun 2009 6:26

So I've been looking around at locks to practice on, and was recommended a No. 140 Master Lock for my second lock to pick. Browsing their website, I found 2 of these locks, one of them is just a regular No. 140 and the other is a No. 140 "Keyed Different".
What does this mean? I've searched everywhere and can't seem to find a definition.
Thank you ahead of time for the info!
Happy picking!

These locks can be ordered in Keyed alike series. Meaning that you can order groups of them on the same key. The Keyed different ones would all be on different keys.

Normally you would need to specify them to be keyed alike and to which key number. So it seems a little odd to see them labeled that way.

Every dumpster in town is keyed to one of two locks, either the master #3 or an american lock for the high security trash. You can go to any locksmith and ask to buy a dumpster lock and he will know which lock you want. or if you know someone who has a set of KA (keyed alike) locks, you may guess that there is a chance that his key will also fit all the dumpsters,

So when you are talking about common padlocks keyed alike, You are not talking secure. Also few locksmiths want to carry a variety of the same brand of lock KA, they just buy them by the case and sell as many of them as the customer wants, and sell the rest of them to subsequent customers.
There is little incentive for anyone to stock a lot of different KA sets.

This tells them how to pin locks you buy if you are buying more than one lock.

+ Keyed different - completely different keying
+ Keyed alike - the same keying
+ Master keyed - different user keys, same master key

So technically, then, wouldn't buying a single Master Lock padlock be the same as buying the same lock "Keyed Different"?
I assume they put that up there if for buying cases, then?
I would assume just a regular padlock would be "keyed different"
I guess I'm just confused as to why they advertise a regular padlock AND a "keyed different" padlock of the same model

It is easier for them to include this on every page because doing so means they don't need to keep track of your cart and correlate all of it together. In some cases keyed alike might be tied to your account for previous purchases of the same lock, but you'd have to check with whoever you're buying from.
