Spring shearing

Postby acv » 8 Jul 2009 22:42

So I just got that easy to re-pin, tapped pin hole lock and I'm now running into a weird problem:

I removed all but two pins and I only need to pick one of the pins and then applying heavy tension will shear a chunk of the remaining pin and rotate the cylinder. Clearly not the intended action. This is with the pins that came with the locks (i.e.: those that the key expects to find).

Does that mean that my lock is out of spec (I'm not sure what they keyway is, it's a generic chinese mortise cylinder so I guess schlage) if a "0" or "1" (there's the slightest cut in the blank 0.326") bitting fail to clear the cylinder? Or should there be a longer driver pin for these cases?

The description above should have read "shear a chunk of the remaining pin's spring". Sorry.

On cheap locks they don't bother to put longer drivers in to balance out having short key pins, which is what's happening here. Depending on the make, that could be just how they are or perhaps you've got generic pins which weren't made for it. Can't say for sure.
