Yale X5 Stripped

Postby Craneman » 29 Jul 2009 9:51

Hi all,

Bought a new Yale Lock to play with, but It was well above my pick capability.
So I decided to strip it down, photograph my progress and to see what mess I could make.
Also I could see what security pins it had. So if I was successful I could
put it back a few pins at a time and teach myself how to pick it.

Click the link below for a slide show of my pictures.

(any prob's password for guest is picked)
Couldn't video anything as not got camcorder. :(

I read the guide LSI to lock picking,
found something to use as a plug follower got my screwdriver out to
release the cir-clip and away I went like a mad professor.
I must say I surprised myself at what I can do.

Only lost one spring and the tiny ball bearing that sat at the top of the
plug. The bearing because it took me by surprise and went boing and the
spring because I put one spring in the bible chamber with a standard
driver pin pushed in the plug and as I was putting the cir-clip on I
got butter fingers droped it on the tray the plug fell halfway out with
the driver pin and the spring got caught in an empty chamber. So I
ended up pulling it out.SNAP, oops
So at the moment I have three chambers filled with standard driver pins the key still works and I can Pick it yay.
Next I'm going to try the serrated driver pins but that will be another story. 8)
TTFN.

Hmm, I'll have to see if I can get one of these. Looks pretty fun! No experience with serrated pins personally, but I'd say if you treat them like spools they shouldn't be too much more difficult especially since you know where they are and what the serrations are like. You know exactly what to feel for this way so it shouldn't be too bad. Let us know how you get on. :)

Looks like a fun lock, its always great when a spring pops out of nowhere isn't it? Had that happen on so many occasions, finding it after is the fun part. Are those going to be your first crack at a security pins? Or have you dealt with any others before?

HI Rift & Solomon,
Thanks for your comments, It's the first time of security pins. Took out my three standard pins last night and replaced with the three serrated driver pins picked quite easily some how don't think it was meant to, Just felt to easy ?
So I will buy some different locks in the next month or so as I'm a bit short on dollars. Have to look on eBay and see what I can find.
Happy Picking

Hehe, it was probably easy because you've seen the bitting and you know exactly where the security pins are. Try putting it back together in a random order and see if you can still pick it. For added fun, show someone how to repin it and get them to put it together so you don't know where the serrated drivers are either. That'll keep you busy for a while. ;)

Yeah once you know where the pins are its much easier to pick the lock open. Also once you add the rest of the pins in the lock will behave completely different (as is to be expected). While i was working my way up to filling my current lock with all its pins (4 spools and one regular) as I added pins the chance of resetting one while setting another grew and grew. So as you progress further there will be more and more things that you will have to feel going on inside the lock.
