My Locks

Postby Craneman » 28 Jul 2009 10:45

Hi all

Not Wrote a post since I joined but I got my new pick set.(23pce gosso)

Since then I've been practicing :? on a few Padlocks (see pic's) of various sizes. Some I've spp  and some I've raked. I also managed to open what I believe to be called (as I'm a newbie) a euro cylinder barrel lock 5 pins(raked) With extreme joy. :D

What a wicked buzz from that spin of the tension wrench or the 'POP' of the lock. :D

Most padlocks I now look at and think Yep i can open you and I've even done front and back doors on me house (upvc doors euro locks) much to the wife's annoyance.

Also done my car door lock (Volvo Yep I know a Volvo but I like it ) and me Crane door lock.

Yep I think I got the bug. :)

Next is to buy some warded picks, and possibly buy or make some picks for lever locks.

I have gone you-tube mad, what a excellent way of learning. Done a lot of reading as well.

Never been into learning so much not even at school.

Below are the links for me pictures.

Glad to hear that you caught the bug, but a word of advice don't picks locks in use. It is too easy to break them or break the pick off in the lock. The good thing about this hobby though is that it is pretty easy to get locks for cheap using ebay, this site, and second hand stores. Good luck with your new hobby.

Congrats on your progress so far, I picked up a goso set to see what they were like and I was impressed for the price. They're not the smallest but I find myself using them a lot... only really use my slimlines now for newer rim cylinder type locks, and ones with particularly restrictive keyways.

I like the fact that there are 5 different hooks with it, aswell as a number of rakes. Not the best quality tools, but there's a great variety there and as long as you're not heavy handed with them I imagine they'll last a very long time. There are some picks I haven't found a use for, but I'm sure that'll come in time. In particular, next to the dimple rake there is a very sharp hook with a grooved tip... doesn't fit into anything, same for the zig-zag type one next to it. Maybe someone can fill us in as to what those arte actually for, heh. As for the automotive picks, they look similar to the KLOM set but I haven't tried them properly as I don't have any old car locks lying around. I slipped the tensioner into my own lock to see how it fits though, and it seems very secure.

Hi Solomon
The picks with the grooves in I believe are for extracting broken keys. Seen some you tube footage of broken key extraction and from what I can see that might be their use but I might be wrong.
The zig zag one? the one that looks like a saw blade? I have raked with it but need a big keyway.
One of my favourite picks for some of the locks I have tried is the double half diamond for raking or the double half circle.
I must agree on the thickness though I have struggled with narrow keyways am thinking when I'm a bit flush to get maybe a set of southords.
Happy picking

I doubt they're for extracting broken keys, they're way too big. You need something small to slip between the pins and the key for that. Maybe someone here can fill us in... these are the ones I'm referring to:

I'd probably use them for wafer cam locks, but other than that I can't see much use for them. As for the sawtooth rake, I find it works fine for euro cylinders and older style rim cylinders... it only tends to get stuck if your tensioner is taking up space in the keyway. I'd prefer it to have a bit more variation in the grooves rather than having equal peaks all along it, but it does an alright job. You're not gonna fit it into many padlocks though, I can tell you that much. :)

i would use the two picks in the red square when you come into a low pin high pin prediciment.

when there is a long bottom pin infront of a short bottom pin...

the one that looks like a v is also an ok rakeing tool...

for wafer cam locks i wouldnt waste time pickng them.
just get a ball pick and jiggle it a bit... 100 percent success so far.

good luck and most importantly have fun

That's what I'd have said aswell, but I can't fit them into the keyways of any lock I have. Not even the brockhage practice lock, and that thing has oodles of room to work with. I have one lock with a high lift pin right at the back, and 3 low lift pins before that (here's the pinning), and I just use a long hook to get at it... that's difficult enough because of the keyway; these things don't seem to be of any use whatsoever. What you say about wafer locks is true, they are exceptionally easy. Aside from maybe using them in higher security wafer cam locks, I'm stumped.

if you figure it out then let us know...

i usually dont mess with the funny lookin picks. everyhing ive ever spp'd has been a hook half diamond and a deep hook, and rarely the peterson reach pick

for raking i use the bogota or hook...(or a round for wafer locks)... nothing fancy.

If you maintain the tension and have a sticking (mushroom anti pick pin) the these two (in Red) could be used, with a degree of force, to lift the lower pin past the anti pick pin

else, just dremel then down to something that works for you :D :D :D :D

Good set of picks though, how did you get on with the dimple rake?

I have a set of Rytans and John Falle (here in UK) that I swear by, and at!!!
