Please help with Master no. 532

Postby LocksmithArmy » 4 Aug 2009 18:52

This lock is not really in use it is just in our way. We cannot lock our generator box with it in the way.

I have tried on multiple ocasions to pick it... and I have been successful, but the lock is still in our way... Why you ask?

Every time I pick it I have to insert a screwdriver to try and turn the cylinder, it has an incredibly strong spring in it. If I slip it slams back to the locked position, but even with the cylinder turned the lock wwill not actually open.

Am I doing somthing wrong? Now, the lock is extreamly dirty as it has been in ireq for years on this box but the keyway and everything are still shiny when you clean all the dirt off.

Is the shank just stuck or is there somthing I am not doing.

Does anyone have one of the Master no.532s? Are they all this springy and tough to turn...

Thank you all

It's not a shank, it's a shackle. Never call it a shank. People who sell locks on ebay and don't know any better call it a shank, and you're better than that.

And I think an American Lock 700 TSR body has a heavier spring than the Master Lock No. 532. That lock is actually very fun to pick. What will happen is once picked if you do not turn the tension wrench all the way to make the spring push the shackle out of the body, the spring does have a tendency to surprise you and spring back and lock the padlock.

An S shaped rake works great for me on these, but I'll tell you, when I was just starting to pick locks, that 532 stood proudly on my coffee table for almost a year, until the night I took this picture.

Yours may be too dirty to pick well, just cut it off, it's an acceptable loss.

OK,
So I went to work today with the intention of truning it so hard I would bent my tensor.
I picked for about 2 minutes and it turned 1/4th turn...(as usual I have picked the cylinder several times before) but as expected the shackle did not budge. So I pushed and pushed on the tensor to try and turn it some more... Nothing... (I decided not to bend my tensor  )

But since I chose my thickest tensor I was able to get a good enough grip to be able to slam the whole lock in a downward motion and the hasp popped the shackle. yay! :D

The dirt on top had caked on so much that it was almost like it was painted over. I took my big metal file and cleaned it off. Now it's all shiny but I could not take it apart to clean the inside so I still have to pull the shackle open instead of it popping open. And it turns my picks grey.

Thanks all for your help.

I have a 532, it is extremely easy to pick, the keyway is very soft and will round out fairly easy with a tension wrench when picked alot, these are a great little lock however and are fun to play with. I know what you mean about the plug having spring pressure, if you happen to lose grip with your wrench, it's all back to square 1!
