Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

I'm trying to pick a lock I've acquired and it looks a lot like a master lock #5 but it says Magnum on the blue strip across the bottom. When I try to pick the lock all the pins automatically bind at the top of the keyway no matter how light of tension I use. I think I may have gotten a false set once but that's as close as I've come... I believe their is a security pin but I'm not positive. Anyone have any more info on this lock or any advice for getting it open ?

Photos of the lock please... images speak volumes more words than what you can type about it.

Sorry. One of the points of showing a photo of YOUR lock, is to prove that it is not in use. If it isn't hanging off a fence, gate, etc, we would be more likely to believe that the lock is yours and actually offer helpful advice.

I'll post a picture of my lock shortly.... I understand the precaution, I love picking and have never picked a lock that wasn't mine and would never do so. If I was really trying to pull something over on the community do you think I would explain that the picture wasn't of my actual lock. Like I said I understand the precaution but you don't have to be rude... It says a lot more about you then me when you assume I'm some criminal.

Frankly, there's no point in him proving that its his lock, that lock is just like all the other masterlocks and crappy chinese remakes. Just keep working at it, try tensioning the cylinder from a different place, and take your time. If there is a security pin(which I doubt) you will feel the cylinder trying to rotate back(counter-clockwise) when you push up on that stack. Also, if you are trying to rake it SPP with a hook or diamond will be better practice, and may make it easier to open the lock.
<jkthecjer> this kwikset did not yield so easily

Thanks sfi72... I didn't read anywhere in the rules that you had to post a picture of the lock in question to prove that is wasn't in use. I've seen many posts where a question is asked about a lock and people respond and never with doubts about the poster trying to do something illegal. I am interested in locksport not ripping things off... If I wanted to do that a bolt cutter would work a lot better.... could a moderator please tell me if I have presented myself in a way that would suggest that I was trying to do something illegal ? Or are these people replying to me just trying to throw around weight that they don't have ?

Dont take it personal, you've just run into the cerberus that guards the site, there are a number of them. happens to most new guys.
Oddly if you post, "I have a specific lock I want to open", then you get the 'prove its yours' posts, but if you find a way to ask the same question without admitting that you know of any such lock, and ask in a general way about a type of lock such as master laminated padlocks and the chinese knockoffs. you can get a lot of information about the lock without claiming to know one of these locks.
That said, the information is already here, all of it, and most people who answer questions about this information are people who learned it here, except for those who knew it and put it here.
but it feels nice to ask for help and get it.
welcome to the site.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

I've seen many posts where a question is asked about a lock and people respond and never with doubts about the poster trying to do something illegal. You do not have to, but we do prefer it for two reasons:
1. New members, with their first post asking about how to open a lock does throw up a red flag. (there has been many issues before with this- and normally if a new member searches, they will find a thread already on the exact same lock in question)
2. Even though you may know exactly what the lock is, other members on the forum do not know what it looks like. You may describe it, and there may be something different you did not notice, like the keyway may be uncommon, or... well, we also just simply like photos.
There are also countless threads from new members who ask one question about opening/bypassing XXX type of lock, and we never hear/see from them again- without going into details, there has been times when moderators on this forum had to approach a local police force due to some incidents. buddhist96 wrote:I am interested in locksport not ripping things off... Glad to hear your interested in locksport, and welcome! I am sure you will enjoy your time here. The way you asked did send up a red flag, even on my end- hence me asking if you had a photo with my first reply.
Regarding members trying to throw weight around- we tend to self police lots here (but for members- only to a point- a member will mention/post something- but they should never try to act like a moderator- example: tell you to do something, etc...) its a fine line to walk, but for the most part, it works well. We also have report buttons, and I commonly get "PM'ed" on IRC to check on xxx thread, etc. Yes bolt cutters do work quicker, but if someone is trying to leave as little evidence behind a crime took place.... well....
We tend to err on the side of caution with new members most of the time, (or if someone posts something really odd- like how to bypass a safe lock, auto lock) since this hobby is so misunderstood.
Anyways, I hope this clears some of your questions up.. if not, you can PM me or another moderator, and ask more questions.. or you can ask here in this thread if you wish. And now.. lets see some photos of your lock in question! (I like photos)

@Raimundo, I really liked that cerberos. You have to fight them, put them to sleep, drug them, or giv´em a drink to get into this hades. They also keep the dead souls inside away from the world.
