Wierd Solo lock

Postby Varminter » 24 Sep 2009 17:50

Okay so I bought a "bucket" of locks that I received today and in it were a few Yale's, a few American's, a few Wilson Bohannan, a few Master's and another few no-names and this Solo lock.

But I can't figure it out, what is the point of it? I can't see a key way or any combination mechanism, in fact it almost looks like your not supposed to get it open after closing it.

Other that the brand name and the "made in Taiwan" I can't see anything special about it, except the fact it got no way of opening (that I can see).
It is not solid nor heavy, and if I shake it I can hear something rattle inside it.

Does anyone here know anything about this lock-thingy?

its magnetic. Search for "Gemii lock"

Yours appears to be a knock off.

Yep, it's a magnetic padlock. Since it's a crappy chinese copy, try finding some kind of magnet and rub it on the side of the lock, where the indentation is and see if you can feel anything move. Try tensioning the shackle while using the magnet as well.

Brilliant! I just took the most powerful magnet I could find (from a large loud-speaker) and rubbed the lock against it. After a few strokes it popped open. and I have to say, I'm not impressed about the lock, yeah I know it's just a cheap knock off but anyway

Does it have a keyway at all or are all the sides just flat?

I have to say, it looks pretty impressive, other than the big magnet bit.

On one side of the lock body there will be a small indent, which is where you would touch the magnetic key

These locks are mainly used in Marine applications, as they will not corrode/rust. (well that was the theory) heh..

the key fits on the indented edge of the lock, the key has four plastic hexagon pieces inside the key shaft, and on each plastic piece, there is one tiny magnet, oriented to fit in a precise position and polarity among the six possible positions, and two polarities, in each of the four plastic hexes.

You know that trouble you sometimes have when trying to install a lock, getting the screws to align with the holes tapped to take them while holding the cylinder up to one side of the lock,
or getting a tailpiece to slip into the right hole in the boltwork while closing the cylinder and the thumbturn over it?

The mechanism of the magnetic lock has a steel plate with four holes in it, there are little nails that go into these holes when aligned by the magnets,

I suspect that by rubbing a powerful magnet on the keyway side of the lock he managed to make those nails hunt around until they found the holes, and the magnet may have tensioned the steel plate to grab the nail when the tip was in the hole,

I'll have to try that on one of these locks.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!
