Messed up a tubular lock.

Postby WolfSpring » 1 Jan 2010 20:03

So I had a brain fart and was picking a tubular lock with a t-wrench and a hook. Wasn't really thinking about the fact that once the plug spins the bottom pins would pop back up into the top pins. This didn't seem to be a problem, I thought I'd just pick each pin as I moved each position, but what happened is one of the pins dropped into the keyhole spot with no spring and the next bottom pin popped up and jammed somehow. Don't ask, I now see the purpose for a tubular lock pick. I know i'm a DA but hey I was able to "pick it"

Wish I could offer some helpful hints but I'm not a guru on these locks exactly, a lot of it from neglect.

But I can suggest getting the SO tubular picks. I have both types they make (except the 10 pin version) and they work extremely well and very easy to use.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Yeah I was posting more to expain my lapse in sense that someone else would not attempt and have the same problem. It was an 8 dollar tubular trailer hitch lock I bought at Sportsmans Warehouse so no biggie, I bought it for the sole purpose of picking tubular locks. Need to not be stingy and buy the right pick for the right lock. So good to be back in the states and able to go to a store and buy somethine other then Master "contractor grade" crap.

Either pick it back or grind the "tit" off the key and you can insert it in any of the 7 positions (if it's a centered lock) and turn it back that way.

file the locating lug on your key.
This way you can insert the key 1 position out and re-open the lock.
If you only have one key, try filing it at a tapered angle so it is easily inserted but wont easily pull out. Ie: fat at the top thin at the bottom, else you will end up pulling the key out of the housing mid turn.
