Did you know this ? (anti-shim system)

Postby FrenchKey » 12 Jan 2010 16:42

Hi,

I did not see that anywhere on the forum, I discovered a anti-shim feature on a ABUS padlock. (sorry if it as already been posted)

I put in red for better see. Sorry for the quality, but I think you can see, or at least understand what it is.
There is a groove in the shackle in order to match the line of the body. Moreover, the padlock is quite well adjusted. All of that makes shiming allmost impossible.
With special shims, it would probably be possible to shim it, but it might be very very harder than usual.

I wonder if other brands do the same or similar anti-shim stuffs... did some of you see something similar ?

Have Fun

That is a very simple and ingenious design. Does a groove run on the shackle as well to match that protrusion on the inside of the lock?

Yes, there is, that's what I tried to say (but my english is not as good as I wish  )

This groove runs only on the bottom of the shackle (exactly where the protrusion is)

Strange you should pick the user handle "French key". When I was an apprentice to "french key" a lock was to insert a special key into the cylinder with reverse deep cuts so that it could not come out without either disassembling the lock or somehow lifting the tumblers to release the key. Hadn't thought about that name for years....

Oops my bad. I was in a rush when I read that and completely missed it. Your English is perfectly fine though.

I really dont see how this would be antishim. If you insert the shim from the left side then turn it you'd be fine. Since the rest of the locking mechanism is the same as a traditional one.

Only other antishim design I've seen is made by Masterlock.

The locking system is exactly under the protrusion, so your shim will have difficulties to push the bolt. Moreover, if your shim is a little V-shaped (as often) , it won't touch the bolt at all.
And because of the room left, you need a thin shim, that would have been able to open if no anti-shim, but there, it will bend (i think)

This is not the absolute anti-shim system, but it makes life harder for shimer  by a clever design.

What is the anti-shim of masterlock ? No masterlock padlock anymore in my shop...
