my next lock/locks puchase?

Postby geardog32 » 4 Mar 2010 0:54

so i have been picking for a little while and can easily pick all my locks. i am bored with them because they are too easy now. i have picked:

cheap Chinese brass padlock
guard security 30mm?
master no.1
master no.3
master no.5
master no.140
two random gun locks
my mailbox lock(out of necessity)
my deadbolt (kwickset) (not anymore now that iv heard horror stories about it)
u haul discus type
and a brinks 50mm brass high security padlock

I know I haven't even scratched the surface yet but I am looking for something more challenging but at the same time not to expensive. also where do most of you get your locks it seems most of the big box stores have a pretty dismal selection. I am open to all suggestions.

i'd try an american 5200, 1100 or one of the other series. also ebay's one of the best places to find locks.

Go to an auto junkyard and get an assortment of door and trunk locks from a variety of american (except GM) and foreign vehicles. If the vehicles are older the locks should not cost much - call and ask first.

If you don't have one already, get a 6 or 7 pin cylinder and an assortment of spool and other pins and learn how to change the combinations.

Swap known locks with somebody else - is there a locksport group near you?

I'v been looking at ace hardware's equivalent to the american locks and they look pretty decent lots of spools and serrated pins. Are they difficult? Iv also looked at some best locks. I'm going to try to talk to some maintenance people at my college because they use best cylinders on EVERYTHING, seriously i haven't seen one lock without a best cylinder.

Correct me if im wrong but i thought that all car door and trunk locks were wafer locks?

I have searched the locksport section for groups near dayton or cincinnati ohio with no luck.

The next thing I moved up to was a couple of different keyways that were easily repinnable and then started to add securtiy pins.

At the picking very narrow keyways seemed harder than a couple of security pins in a large keyway.

Have fun

If only I would have had this advice when I first started buying locks... I have a tendency to dive into hobbies and boy did I ever dive into this one ($$$).

I plan on selling a lot of stuff soon. Keep an eye out in the For Sale forum.
