Looking for simple 4-digit padlock

Postby BigFurryMonster » 11 Apr 2010 3:45

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to buy a 4-digit padlock that cannot be picked too easily.

By 'too easily', I mean by using turn & pull techniques such as in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGkOj0W_Zbw

I realize that the lock I'm looking for probably can be picked by someone skilled; however, I just need it to be un-pickable by people who have only basic knowledge like having watched such videos. It does not need to be top class, but affordable.

Any advice on which I should buy?

Thanks,
BFM

Hrm. Just to avoid possible confusion, that's not a padlock in that photo: that's a Master Lock key safe (i.e., when you dial the correct combination the front face opens and exposes a cavity where you can store keys, or other small objects).

Most of the cheap four-dial "set your own combination" locks are all built on a very similar design, so they are (for the most part) all subject to the same weakness in terms of how you decode them. I don't know a model off the top of my head that's better than any others in that regard.

This lock is fairly resistant to surreptitious opening http://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-1500iD-Combination-Assorted/dp/B002TSN4SQ

Those locks are crazy.

You could also just pick up a S&G 8088. :)

I bought one of those.. its nothing short of amazing for what it is and does..

I would not trust it for a long physical attack, but for just making someone go WTF after playing with it a few moments and walk away, it will work. Good luck figuring it out if you don't know the combo.

Oh, and you can set the combo to anything you want, any length you want. (think of that old game called Simon if you were alive back in the good old days..) http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/5749/simon
