Looking to get a lock for my door...

Postby noxnoctum » 24 May 2010 17:37

Alright so I just need a basic 2-way (in other words I can lock it/unlock it from both sides) lock for my door, something cheap preferably 8).

I'm not a locksmith or anything just came to this forum to ask what kind I should look for... don't really know anything about this stuff...

I'm unclear about what exactly you mean by "two way."

Do you mean that you want a deadbolt with a keyway on both sides? (Referred to as a double cylinder deadbolt) Or is it a standard (single cylinder) deadbolt that you're after?

Do you want a deadbolt at all? Or is it a key in knob system for which you're looking?
There is no means by which I can be removed from the love of God. For this, I am indescribably glad.

If you, like most people, are stuck choosing between Kwikset & Schlage at Home Depot - go with Kwikset for now. They're going to even out again soon, but for the time being Kwikset has the lead with the Smartkey.

It's not a great lock, but if you're looking for a cheap deadbolt, that's probably what you're looking for.

Having picked many a 6-pin locks, I could not buy a lock which i couldn't pick myself. It would have to have some sort of gimick for my to buy it :P
I wonder what locks the people on this forum actually have on their front doors. If they, like myself, wouldn't have anything other than a Abloy Protech, EVVA 3KS, etc etc.

I love my EVVA 3KS. Nothing gets the ladies attention more than pulling out a weird-shaped key.

And that isn't a euphemism....

I have crappy Schlage knockoffs on my doors. I rent - don't get a choice about it. I installed an abloy on the drop safe at work to replace a wafer cylinder. If I had a choice in the matter? I don't know. I don't have a reliable locksmith near me, so I couldn't go too high-sec without the facilities to cut my own keys. Haven't had to think about it.

I would have expected you of all people to have a fancy lock!

I bet Rick has a Mul-t-lock MT5+ ;)

And unlisted doesn't have a lock, because there is no crime in Canada. :P

Oh, I have fancy locks, just none attached to my doors :P

I actually upped my renter's insurance a couple of years ago just in case someone did decide to mess with/steal them. heh.

ummm if you just need a basic lock, why ask us? Ask the sales rep at Home Depot for a double cylinder Defiant or a Walmart Brinks or Mountain Security and you'll be all set. Walmart double deadbolt $15. Is that cheap enough? Defiant at Home Depot might be $9.99

or is your real question that you want a pick proof double cylinder deadbolt and you'd like it to be inexpensive as well?

write back with some better details, your question is too vague. Also, this isn't a forum about picking out a lock, its about picking them open with lock pick tools.

Honestly, both my mother and father have Kwikset on their doors. I have come to realize that they are depressingly easy to pick, but at this point in time people are more likely to just smash a window then to pick the front door. Also my mom has an alarm system so its not a big problem if they do pick it.
