Extra set of grooves on side of key.

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Extra set of grooves on side of key.

Postby remosewa » 22 May 2010 19:25

My University uses a different type of key than I've ever seen before. In addition to having pin grooves on the top of the key, the side of the key also has grooves as well. This is the side of the key

Edited by Zeke79 - Do not show pictures of keys in use as they can easily be decoded and with a bit of work and proper mill a schlage primus sidebar bitting can be duplicated.
I was just wondering what the extra set of grooves on the side of the key might be for and how it works.

Thanks!

I've seen this kind of lock before. It's got 2 sets of pins that you have to manipulate to open the lock, either by the key or otherwise.

The second set of pins seem to be flush with the key, does that mean there are also pins coming from the side?

Actually, this is interesting, I've heard about Side bars before, but I couldn't find any good diagrams of how they work and how to pick them. I've seen plenty of digital diagrams of standard locks, but none of ones with side bars. Anyone know where I can find a nice illustration?

Not if you intend to try to pick this lock.

Because, you won't be able to, not as a beginner, and its a school lock anyways, so not yours to be picking. Hell, I've been picking for 5 years and I cant pick that lock.

Try that new Google website, this took me all of 10 seconds to find.

You want better pictures? Go to Google Patents and look up Bo Widen, the guy who designed that lock mechanism. Patent 4756177

+1. I can recommend them.

That's a Primus lock as mentioned, although it's the older Primus, not the newer Everest-Primus. Probably not much difference between the two other then partially shared key blanks.

Does anyone know where I might find cutaways of this type of lock? I'd like to try to pick it but I have no idea how to.

You're jumping way ahead of yourself. Do you have any idea how to pick a normal lock, and have you done so already and do you have a real pickset that doesn't consist of paper clips and bobby pins? Schlage Primus is something you have to work up to. It's not a beginner lock.

As for a cutaway, you can buy them from Ingersoll Rand for $80, so just visit your local locksmith that sells Schlage and order one. You will not find one online unless its on ebay and I don't see them on there often.

The cutaway will help you understand whats going on and how the lock works, but I don't recommend cutaways for picking practice.

why don't you recommend using cutaways for picking practice?

personally I think cutaways make you rely too much on your eyes instead of feeling what's in the lock, which is a bad habit. I defiantly just typed "bad hobbit" :F
