American Brand padlock mess up.

Postby jonnyboy091373 » 26 May 2010 20:17

I have an American brand padlock (series 1100) that I am quite fond of as it is one of my confidence boosting locks. I had just recently picked this lock and set it aside, open, so I could work on some other locks that I own. After opening a few more locks I started to put my tools away and close the locks I had opened. I reached for my 1100 American and snap the shackle shut only to realize too late that I had not locked it again. So now the keyway was turned to the 9 o'clock position and I was sure that I had killed it.
Needless to say I was devastated and somewhat ashamed of myself for not remembering such a simple rule of picking American locks. Always make sure it is in the locked position before closing it.
But, all hope is not lost. I was able to fix it and here is how I did it for anyone else who may get themselves into the same situation.
It is quite simple really, I just took my short hook and put it all the way into the lock, and turned it clockwise until it was back into the locked position. I had to wiggle things around a bit, but eventually it worked. The lock that I have does not have a security wafer in it just to let folks know, as I am not sure if this method would work with one.
I then took the lock apart to make sure that nothing had broken in this process and sure enough everything was fine.
I hope this was helpful and any feed back would be great as this is my first post. Sorry if this info is already out there, I was so excited to have learned this trick that I couldn't wait to share. Thanks for reading. :D

I think (?) the issue the OP is talking about has to do with the key-retaining feature on the American 1100, and not the usual "drivers entering the keyway" issue... or am I missing something?

Oh, and, um, Johnnyboy... welcome to LP101: thanks for the post! :)

Oh, and, um, Johnnyboy... welcome to LP101: thanks for the post! :)

Yeah, that is what I was talking about. I have never been very good at explaining what I intend to say, even less so when it comes to writing. The issue is not that the driver pins were stuck in the bottom of the keyway, but that the plug was turned 270 degrees clockwise. I will post pictures of what I mean if i can get my camera working.
Here is what I think happened to the lock.
When you close the shackle while the key is in the lock the plug will turn itself to the locked position. But with no key in the plug, there will be nothing to stop the rotation. In effect the closing mechanism acts as its own plug spinner, and the plug gets turned in the other direction. It gets stuck in this position due to to the locking mechanism of the plug and inside the lock.
(see what I mean about not being able to explain myself well?) these are all just my theories.
here is a video (not mine) describing what I mean... http://www.youtube.com/user/BabyGzz#p/a/u/1/NNOFrT6kZ0Q
the time where this issue is talked about is roughly @ 1:10
Thanks for the welcome, and understanding from all in this site.
And trust me, the search feature is one of my best friends.
