Master (GM) Key System

Postby techguyjon » 2 Jun 2010 11:55

Does anyone know of a pas post or an article on how to create a Master Key System? I have a 5 bedroom house with room mates. Each bedroom door has a lock on it but I want to create a GM key that will allow me access to the entire house. I forgot to mention that there are also 5 exterior doors that I will be adding to the key.

techguyjon:

Let's break down what you are asking for:

So you have 5 bedroom keys which must be different from each other...
You have 5 exterior doors...
You want 1 master key which will open everything...

This is easily accomplished... Some questions:

Do you want each unique bedroom door key to also operate the exterior door(s) as well ?
Are all exterior doors keyed alike ?
Should there be a key which ONLY operates the exterior doors ?

You are looking at a small master key system with either 5 or 6 change keys and one master... A locksmith would be able to provide you with such a keying system with no problem...

Ok, here is the break down:

The GM Key will open all doors but the Front Door. (Front Door on a completely separate key.)

Room mates key will open their Bedroom door and the garage door.

I would go to a locksmith, but I wanted to pin the cylinders myself. The keys might be the hard part as I don't have any machinery.

Originating the keys is the most important aspect of master keying locks...

It would be very unlikely that you would be able to randomly select 6 stray keys and cobble them into s master system...

my suggestion, bring the locks in to the lock shop. tell them what you want and im sure it can be accomplished for about $100(Canadian)

i would charge 15/ lock +25 to originate a small system.
