Abloy - Which cylinder?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Abloy - Which cylinder?

Postby skyiscoolbeans » 5 Jun 2010 18:37

Hello. I was hoping someone could tell me which cylinder is in this lock via looking at the key. I'm a bit confused between an "Exec" and "Protec" key/cylinder and I can't tell the difference. I was hoping it is a Protec cylinder: http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/9390/abloyedrw.jpg

Sorry, that's the only pic I have available as well.

Exec. The bow gives it away because the plastic is molded to the key. On the Protec, the plastic bow is wider and removable.

Thank you very much. :)
May I ask in what ways the Exec is different than the Protec cylinder? Is the Exec just as pick resistant as the Protec? I would bet not.

older technology. As a patent comes to the end of its life, companies have to keep up with key control issues and generic blanks, so they make newer models, like Medeco making the M3, or Abloy making the Protec. Security concerns are also addressed in new lock models from all sorts of lock makers.

Han Fey has written a ton of Abloy papers that can be found on the TOOOL.nl site. They'll explain a lot of the differences, and hopefully answer your questions.

Enjoy the papers: http://toool.nl/Articles_by_Han_Fey
