Schlage G Master Problem

Hey guys,

I have to cut a bunch of Schlage G keys but my cutter can't get a good hold of them because of the small shoulder that runs across the bottom of the key. It holds the key at an angle because of it, so the duplicate is being cut at a slant. Have any of you guys run into this problem?

Is there a better way of doing this, or is there a key I can use instead of the one with the shoulder for this key-way?

What kind of cutter are you using? The HPC 1200, for example, has multiple jaws to better seat certain keys. I have an HPC Speedex on my truck that has 4 jaws in one (simply rotate 90 degrees and its a different bitting). See if your cutter is similar and experiment with the jaw. Worst case scenario you can attempt apply thin metal shims on the side of the blank to get a better grip. (1/16" should be sufficient).

It only has 2 jaws. Good idea with the shim though!

I'm not sure I follow. Why wouldn't you want a shoulder? You could gauge it from the tip on the cutter and that may work but even then when you stick the key into the lock you'd have nothing to gauge it with and it would be a pain to guess until you finally stumbled on where the key should be.

I'm actually talking about that little shoulder that runs along the length of the bottom of the key.

Whenever I run to a problem like that, I fit a piece of wire or a headless nail in a slot on a key.
If nothing else works, I put a small file between the blank and the jaw, you just have to cut carefully.
