Defiant Locks

Postby nsquidc » 23 Mar 2010 21:26

Yes, those cheap Home Depot ones that seem like cheap Kwikset clones.

I bought one recently and played around with it. Was able to single pick it after awhile but wasn't able to rake or bump it... (Weird, I thought.)

Took the lock apart to to re-pin it and behold, there was a spool pin there!

Somehow, the fact that even Defiant locks have security pins in them now makes me smile. :D

They have a spool pin but they're as cheap as they come. Tolerances are way off. I have a handful that I used to play with. Apply tension and pull a half diamond from back to front and listen to all the pins set right in a row. :D

Not true. My parents purchased a Kwikset recently and it has a few spools in it. It's about 2 or 3 months old and hasn't been modified. (I investigated the lock before it was installed.)

Unless things have changed (for the better) "Kwikset" does not have security pins, and "Kwikset UltraMax" do. (Well, a security pin, maybe more).

It is my understanding that all Kwikset cylinders are now produced with Smartkey technology, so anything else will be old inventory.

I've done re-key jobs on many Kwikset Titans and some of the more beefier Kwikset locks with 6 spaces instead of just the standard 5 and those always seem to have at least one or two spool pins in them.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

The pdf files from Kwikset on re-keying the locks state that the locks are sold with 3 spool pins each and to position these anti-pick pins closest to the bow of the key so that the plug would be firmly held from rotating by the rear standard pins till the key was fully inserted. However the Kwikset 5 pin locks sold at Home Depot have no spool pins whatsoever, I had picked one up as a convenient source of spare pins and springs till I could get replacements. Of the six 6 pin Kwikset locks on my house, only one had a single spool pin and half of the locks were missing pins and springs from one position leading me to the conclusion that the builder or the builder's locksmith had been skimming the spool pins out and selecting bittings suitable for 5 pin locks even though they were 6 pin locks in order to skim pins and springs

I've raked a defiant lock with good success. I used a twin peak home made bogata. It was pretty easy to get open. It was a cheap lock. I suppose you get what you pay for.

My apologies for posting in such an old thread, but I just got a Defiant lock my first practice lock. For what it's worth to anybody, it had 3 spool pins in it. Is security pins fairly common place in cheap locks now?

A lot of the chinese locks have them. I don't find them challenging at all because the tolerances are so loose.

That's good to know. I appreciate the input. I wasn't sure if it would wind ip being any more difficult to learn on. So far I've mostly been practicing with 1-3 pins, and only using one spool pin.
