Problems with Defiant deadbolt 154 695

Postby noir » 14 Jul 2010 21:24

As my first lock to learn on, the other day I picked up a Defiant deadbolt 154 695. After a few days of trying with 1-3 pins today I decided to trying putting all normal pins (it's keyed on both sides and had a total of 4 spool pins in both) to see if it would make my experience any easier. At this point I've already gotten several springs a little messed up and somehow managed to get big scratches on both sides of one of the plugs. As I'm trying to get a feel for the lock, a couple of the pins really seem to be sticking, both when settin them and letting them fall. The plug also seems to be getting stuck sometimes when moving it in and out of the hull. With that said, I was wondering if I need to start replacing springs and lubricating the pins. Or, is this normal and I just need to keep working at it?

Scratches on the plug and resitence when turning is usually a sign that a spring is being wound around the plug. This is most common if a top pin is too short and allows the spring to ride the shear line or if a top pin is missing, which allows the spring to ride the shear line.

I definitely may have forgotten a pin or two when turning the plug while there were springs in there :). I know for sure there isnt now because I just re-pinned it. Could it be from permanent damage done by me previously?

You can try sanding off any gouges made in the plug and see if it starts moving better.
