Holes in the bottom of padlocks?

Hey,
Alot of times Ive seen one or two holes on the bottom or side of a padlock. What are these usually for?

Ah, it's nothing to do with security: those holes are there to allow water to drain out (particularly important for locks mounted outside in cooler climates!).

In Deviant's Practical Lock Picking, he refers to that hole as the "Secret Weakness in 90% of Padlocks"...

He later goes on to explain the drain holes.

Great book and highly recommended. He describes both the basics and some advanced picking. Also, makes a purpose of explaining proper terminology. So that not only will you be able to walk the walk, you will be able to talk the talk too.

Thats a good point if you want a padlock especially for outside then get one with drainholes....I thought they were something else but now that you mention it...
