I'm surprised when you said that all professional locksmiths do it this way. Nothing could be further from the truth. In terms of time to rekey a kwikset cylinder, it is by far and away much quicker to use the method FF and keysman say. That's the way just about every locksmith I ever met rekeys them.

Perhapsd these so called professionals Evan, are not locksmiths? (just teasing)

Or at least far enough inland so that sea sprays along the coast and weird crusticle/salt/sand deposits building up that hold water and can freeze solid inside locks isn't a factor for them...

ever wonder why they are often referred to as Kwiks**t?
One One was a race horse, one one won one race, one two was a racehorse, one two won one too.

Yeah, but most homeowners won't fork over the cash to install a Kaba/Ilco (Lori) type deadbolt with a solid brass Ilco cylinder installed which costs MORE than an entire Kwikset knob lock and deadbolt pair...

So umm like $70 for the deadbolt, $20-ish for the Ilco mortise cylinder +plus install/service call fee... LOL... The weekend warrior homeowner types would rather spend that $125 on an entire new set of big box Kwikset locks than buy a lock which will still be intact 10 years later...
