Strange lock

Postby Shyfted » 1 Mar 2011 3:27

So I purchased this lock from ebay for a few dollars and thought id see I could find out. If you look through the part of the keyway thats circled you can see right through the entire lock. You insert the key teeth facing down and the lock pops open when its turned 1/4 clockwise. it doesnt feel like a tumbler (im a noob so its hard to explain what it is like). It has a number 44 stamped on the front and A5 on the back. I can provide more info if need be but unable to take any sort of decent picture with my camera (the one posted from from the ebay seller. So how would I go about picking something like this?

It's a lever lock. That little rotating piece is a curtain which is designed to frustrate picking - I'm not sure about this particular lock but the curtain is usually what throws the bolt, so under tension you'll have very little space to maneuver a standard wire.

If you tension the curtain with a normal wrench like you'd use for pin tumblers, does it spin freely or stop at a certain point? If it stops, it means the curtain is what's tensioning the bolt, so you can just tension it that way and make a wire which will get around the curtain and lift the levers.

If it spins freely, it means the bolt is thrown by the tip of the key. The curtain does the same job in this case, but you won't be able to tension the curtain itself. If this is the case you'll need 2 wires, one to tension the bolt and one to lift the levers. I'd put the tension wire through the back to make things easier... whichever way it tensions though, if you have no experience with making wires for lever locks you're not gonna have an easy time of it

It does spin freely all the way around. And I dont have never made wires. I think ill put this one aside and give it a crack when im a bit more experienced.

That'll be a 2 wire job then :D

If you do want to take a crack at it, just remember it's all about working your wires around the curtain. The bolt is at the back, the levers are in front... tension the bolt, lift the levers, binding order applies just like with pin tumblers. Look up "anotherdarkhorse" on youtube, he makes his own wires for lever padlocks and would be the best guy to ask (that I know of).
