small combo padlock

I have been trying to figure out the combination of a small padlock by using the sound method.
Ive heard that method doesn't really work but sometimes when I am turning the dial I here a sharp clicking sound. I was wondering if this sound was the first disc inside the lock setting?

I was given this lock by a relative of mine. I think the lock is in between 20 and 30 years old.

What you heard was correct - the sound method doesn't work (I won't say never because you might get lucky, but it's not reliable). The click you hear means 'something' has happened, but that 'something' is one of a number of possibilities and is probably least likely to be the sound of a dial setting correctly.

There are several ways to open a padlock, depending on its age and make, but I'm never sure how much 'bypass' information can be discussed in open forum, especially when it's a combination lock.

However, for any further help, the starting point would be to post a photo of the padlock so it can be identified.
