Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Master #140 Hazard?

Postby pin_pusher » 30 Nov 2010 21:28

anyone know what it is that should cause a health hazard from the Master Lock 140? they have a label (at least in my state) that says you must wash hands after handling the lock, because of harm to reproductive systems. i tried looking some information up to no avail.

Its probably just a precaution to stop people from being able to sue them. Possibly they have had problems with people claiming copper poisoning? This is all speculation, but hope it helps.

Surprised there isn't a warning against putting the lock in your mouth and trying to eat it then.

California is so label happy I don't think people even pay attention to them. They are on everything.

a small amount of lead is an alloy metal in brass (40 to 60 percent copper most of the rest is zinc and sometimes for eaze of machining there is a small amount of lead.
any copper brass or bronze that has weathered and is covered by verdigris, (copper oxide of some sort) will deposit on hands and you should wash your hands before eating.

I'm waiting for them to make people sign lead disclosure statements when buying stuff. (maybe in old lead pencil?) ;)

pencils dont contain lead, only graphite. brass contains copper and zinc, and a small amount of lead that makes for easier machining. the copper in locks and door knobs tends to kill bacteria with its admittedly toxic properties, be sure to wash your hands before eating after handling green (verdigris) copper.

He actually specified "old" pencils, which did use lead. I still find it amusing swiping solder across paper and seeing it mark.
The BiLock isn't the first bump proof pin tumbler because it isn't a pin tumbler.
And it's called a shear line, not a "sheerline".
