Best way to remove dust from lock

Postby Cyberfox » 10 May 2011 5:40

Few days ago I got call from my colleague.He ask me to try to open K1 cylinder on industrial hangar door.When I arrive to place and try to pick this cylinder I perceive this is full of fine dust.Picking in this state is almost impossible.My first think is to drill the lock but but before this final solution I try to eject much dust as possible with WD40,so I spray lot of WD40 in cylinder and after this use electric pick gun.Few minutes later I successfully open cylinder.
I have 2 questions for rest of us:
1.What is yours solutions to remove dust from cylinders?
2.Which lock design is most resistive against dust?(My fist choice is disc-detainer)

1. My solution to removing dust from a lock is a heavy dose of silicon/teflon lubricant. If you are going to use WD-40 thats fine. Remember though, after it dries to either use nothing at all or some type of silicon/teflon lubricant. Don't use graphite on locks that collect a lot of dust, bad things will happen.
2. The lock design that best resists against dust is one that includes some kind of dust cover over the keyway to protect it. ;)

@Cyberfox:

You remove dust from a lock by using a solvent (WD-40 or your other personal preference) or you can try blowing it out with compressed air or a combination of both...

You could let the solvent soak a few minutes to loosen the gunk and then use a few bursts of compressed air in a can (like the computer technicians use to clean keyboards and remove dust from the inside components of a computer) to purge the loosened dust/gunk from the lock...

As Varjeal pointed out the best way to deal with dust in a lock cylinder is to prevent it from building up to begin with, cylinders with dust covers are available from many lock manufacturers... Perhaps replace the cylinder on the industrial hangar door with one that has a dust cover if that is possible...

Just a suggestion. Try blowing out the dust first with a compressor or computer canned air before inserting any liquid solvent. If you put the liquid first it can cause a pile of mud that wont want to move. Also, depending on the type of lock mechanism, the liquid will wash the dust down into another unreachable part of the lock.

I have made dust covers on mortise cylinders and an Abloy padlock by adding a screw at the top and just off center. We have brass and aluminum key tags. Simply attach one through the hole with a screw. To open the lock the tag must be rotated to expose the keyway. Tighten the screw just enough that you can still move the cover and set the screw with Loc-tite or super glue. A spring washer above the cover can also help keep the seal tight.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.
