Purchasing advice

Postby PiMaxC » 14 Sep 2011 21:25

So I'm not a lockpick, I've dabbled briefly, but I am a fan of securing my stuff. So I figured the best people to ask about lock quality would be the people that try to take it down.

I'm currently looking into getting an ABUS bike lock and I trust ABUS because my boss is a fan and he doesn't seem to buy crap.

So what brands do you suggest? What's hard to pick? What's hard to break? What gives you the best bang for the buck?

For a bike lock I recommend you focus on the physical strength of the lock over how pick resistant it may be. Criminals will not typically bother with pick locks; they look for fast, easy, and usually destructive means to defeat security measures.

From the quick look over I did on Abus chain locks, like their Granite City model, it looks to me like a great lock. They are expensive though.

Don't worry, we're not "lockpicks" either.. lock picks are the tools we use, we prefer the term lock pickers. Lockpick sounds like something out of an 1800's Sherlock Holmes novel. =)

Have a look at OnGuard bike locks, and look at the Kryptonite Fugettaboutit lock and chain.

That said, for my personal setup, I use an ABUS rubber coated guy wire cable(real pain in the a$s to cut) but long enough to go through frame and both front and rear tire, with a shrouded Medeco padlock.
