Emter? and Whats next?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Emter? and Whats next?

Postby Imp » 18 Oct 2011 17:08

Ok so I have two questions.

The first. I was at a restore, and next to roughly a googillian 3 dollar pointless locks, I found this tiny little box that was 22.50. I knew it had to be something special. On the box it said Emter then underneath it said assa abloy. I couldn't remember anything else, and the names I wrote on my arm to be sure :D. I recognize assa, but its a parent company, and all the searches I do don't seem to fine "emter" they pull up emtek though? What I find about emtek says that they are just the same skill level as schlage. The lock itself was also a deadbolt that had a lock on both sides. My question is, what do you guys know about this lock, or what do I need to go check/look at on it, to see if its worthwhile to get.

My second question is, if the emter? isn't anything, what lock(s) should I start looking for. I can blow through the masterlocks, kwiksets, and atlas' of the world. As far as I know the toughest lock I've gotten my hands on is just a schlage, I have locks that have spool pins in them, and they no longer are a problem for me. I'm kinda excited to find a serrated pin sometime soon though. But before I start rambling, I just need to know, whats next?

There is no Emter, it had to be EMTEK.

they're ok to pick, nothing special. They probably just put $22.50 because it's a decorative lock with a nice finish. Don't waste your money on it.

Get an Arrow 6 pin mortise cylinder, or a Falcon or BEST SFIC mortise cylinder, SFIC core, and all the keys. This will help with picking as well as the fundamentals of how those locks works and the purpose of all the keys. I recommend mortise cylinder because it is easy to hold while picking. Padlocks are good too. If you want a challenge, step up to an ABUS No.41 or an ABUS 55/50 or 24/70 ABUS Discus storage unit lock, lots of fun spool pins and the locks are well made so you wont get the same sloppy tolerances that you may find in low end Master locks. Brinks R70 Disc lock is a fun lock available at Walmart. If you want a decent Master, get a ProSeries 6121, usually 1 or 2 spools and a big spring you have to overcome in order to turn the plug. There's also the shiny Master Model No. 532 and smaller brother No. 576. Ace Hardware has them, and perhaps Target. Moving up to even tougher, American Lock 1105, 5200 or Series 20,50, and others in that family. All sorts of nasty serrated pins inside, sure to keep you busy for weeks.

Welcome to the best hobby on earth!
