What knob to use with this master deadbolt?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

What knob to use with this master deadbolt?

Postby warrenDar » 12 Jul 2012 11:27

Hi, when people uses this on a 2-hole door, which handle/knob do they typically use as part of the combination if the goal is to STILL maintain a master key system? Does most people just add a dummy/passage knob on the bottom as part of the combination?

@warrenDar;

A blank passage knob...

That deadbolt is not a master keyed lock in any sense of the word, it is a dual-plugged lock where each plug is capable of operating the lock and one of them (the landlord one) is normally concealed and requires the use of a tool to allow the face plate to swivel open to reveal the second plug...

Since no equivalent dual-plugged knob or lever exists it is not possible to create a "system" using keyed knobs or levers which allows the landlord access using only their special landlord key, as such hardware would totally defeat the purpose of installing the flawed more expensive hardware in the first place a blank passage knob is used...

Landlords should install a quality deadbolt and passage knobs on rental units as it is not possible to secure normal deadbolts from the outside of the door without the key ---such hardware effectively eliminates lock out calls for forgotten keys and the tenants accidentally closing the door behind themselves... Then all you have to worry about is lock outs due to hardware failure...

I guess this depends on what area you are in. Is this for residential rentals? In Los Angeles, rentals are required to have 2 locks on each entry door, so "typically" a locking entry knob is paired with the deadbolt. With this particular deadbolt, you could use a standard Kwikset key-in-knob and pin it to work with both the master and change keys. Though, the thought of master keying a kwikset just makes me cringe. And use of a master key in residential property should be avoided whenever possible.

@sandplum:

With the specific model of deadbolt the OP is referring to, what you proposed is not possible as the "landlord" key plug and keyway is not the same as the standard KW-1 used by the tenants key...

So in Los Angeles apparently to use these locks would require a three holed door and two deadbolts paired with a passage knob or lever...
