How to measure Evva 3ks lock?

Postby Pietrach » 4 Sep 2012 7:37

Hi all
i will be replacing a standard euro cylinder lock 40-40mm and 35-50mm.
I wanted to use Evva 3ks plus locks, but these are is non-standard lengths. Any advice which I should go for, and if these will fit in place of standard euro cylinder locks?

Thanks
Pawel

That's a pretty serious cylinder you're going for there... what kind of doors are they going into? The reason they're supplied in non-standard lengths is probably because they have the option of a defender that sits over the face of the cylinder to protect it, but I'm not 100% on that.

Pretty standard door, wooden with four double glazed panels. I don't want an overexpensive lock, but I want a lock that would stop forced entry or wannabe lock pickers :)
Evva 3ks isnt very expensive (around £70) in my opinion. Other options I looked at were Cisa Astral S and ABS Avocet both half the price and to be honest, based on price only (and no technical knowledge) I am concerned about the quality of these locks. Can it be a decent lock for only £30?? Currently I have Yale anti-bump anti-snap lock (around £40) which I just dont feel comfortable about.

Cisa astral s is a tough one to pick, at least I haven't managed the one I have yet but there are a few who have picked them. Pretty strong anti snap from what I hear too. The average door lock you'll find in a upvc door costs about 10 quid retail so yeah, anything upwards of 30 quid will be pretty good quality. Those BS yales can be tricky to pick and they actually retail for pretty cheap. To be honest I've only come across a couple I couldn't pick before, but they're by no means easy.

If you want something that'll deter "wannabe lock pickers" all you need is a standard GeGe (made by kaba). Absolutely nightmarish locks to pick by hand unless you get really lucky and manage to rake one... but one thing to keep in mind is that not all cheap locks are easy to pick, and not all expensive ones are hard. Regardless, there are very few (if any) bad guys running around picking locks anyway. There are faster and more reliable methods to get into a house that require considerably less skill and are also relatively quiet. The best security you can have isn't in your door, it's about getting into their head... honestly, it's not hard to deter a burglar.

If someone is determined enough, they'll get that cylinder outta the door and throw the bolt along with taking out any secondary locking devices you may have in place (by force if necessary). You need to work on killing their confidence and determination so they move onto an easier target, and you won't do that with hardware alone. It's all about restricting their window of opportunity and the cover that's available.

Think about it, how often do you hear about someone breaking in through the front door? Make your back door just as risky, that's the ticket. Make it hard to get to the back door in the first place, make it hard to hide, then you can focus on making the door itself difficult to get through. And don't make it obvious that you're out either, so you've got that playing on their minds too. You need to focus on windows as well, cos the doors aren't the only ways in. You could really do with having a security evaluation carried out by a locksmith if you wanna be 100% sure about everything, after all this is just general advice I'm giving you.
