Sidebar Wafer Lock picking

Howdy folks!

Has anyone here ever attempted the direct picking of a sidebar wafer lock, and if so, what was your experience?

Thanks!

It depends on what you are working with.

Tibbe pick easily even though they do have a sidebar. The newer Kwikset and Schlage Smartkey cylinders pick easily also.

GM, Chrysler and Ford locks with a sidebar are almost impossible without applying some pressure directly to the sidebar but can be picked on occasion without doing so. Like the old saying goes, even a blind squirrel can find a nut sometimes.

Insert tension wrench, apply tension, insert rake, remove rake quickly, rotate plug.

What did you want me to say?

They are easily pickable. We've been picking them since they came out. Sometimes it does wad up one of the wafers, but usually the key still works, you just can not rekey them.

That works fine on Schlages version (which has thankfully been discontinued). But that doesn't work much at all on the kwikset version, unless you're just setting the pins at a neutral depth and forcing it open...

Kwikset key still works but can't be rekeyed anymore because you actually lifted all the wafers to 3 or 4 level and then forced over it to turn. Schlage securekey locks was discontinued because Kwikset sued them for design concept patent infringement and won big time and force Schlage to take their crappy design off the market. I agree that god for that they are a real piece of trash glad to see them go.
