King of locks

Postby ARF-GEF » 12 Nov 2012 16:42

Hey everyone,

So I've been thinking what the King of locks would be. And I would like to hear as many opinions as possible. So this would be sort of a voting thread. Simply post your choice with or without reasons as you feel like.

The points of view I humbly present to you to consider when making your judgement:
-All-around security (After all that's what locks are for… :) )
-Picking resistance (since that's the main interest for people around here)
-Overall quality (for example manufacturing such as tolerances, materials used, longevity)
-Ingeniousity
-General usability (for example extremely rare locks like Fichet Bauche would get penalty point from me because they are in non-standard size and most importantly very hard to comedy in many parts of the world. The best candidate would be in my opinion a lock which has truly widespread availability like abloy protec)
Oh an I think it should be something from the immediate present. Discussing what was the lock with the most historic importance is a good topic though. Maybe (fro the next one if this turns out to be of interest to y'all.)

And please don’t turn this into a giant argument. Make your vote with or without reasoning and accept that others may have different views. (Or God forbid, someone might be simply plain mistaken in their judgement. No, wait, such a thing might never happen. ) If you disagree you might express that shortly in a reply but don’t hijack the thread into a war.

So my personal vote is for the abloy protec 2
it offers excellent security despite recent news about drilling and decoding ;It is a formidable lock to pick;It has great quality, you can trust it to operate in extreme conditions for a long time; it has a truly amazing mechanism and is widely available in the world
Oh and wit hthe moving ball it just got even more exciting. (And no this is not an infomercial :D  )

My vote goes to the Medeco D-10 drop bolt/jimmy proof.
It is a very imposing lock. It a weight a ton.
Very well built, extremely strong, many high security features.

You don't say what form of lock you're asking about (eg deadbolt, padlock, etc). But I would go with Abloy as well. As far as pick resistance and design protec is up at the top of the list, and physically their locks are very well engineered, solid and look awesome to boot. The only catch is depending where you live, it can be difficult to find a good dealer.

I didn't say what lock I'm thinking about because I did no want to limit people's choices: Simply write the lock you like the most no matter what is it in(padlock or deadbolt or whatever). :)

I might be a little biased, but Abloy Classic.
There are cool new locks from Abloy, but this is 100 years old and still used. Very pick resistant and doesn´t mind dust or freesing temperatures.
