Scandanavian Jail Padlocks

Postby GWiens2001 » 21 Nov 2012 18:44

A locksmith friend showed me these from his collection today. Might even be willing to sell one to me! I hope so!
He has made one key for one of them, and has no keys for the other two. He has others at home that he has keys for.

In this last picture, you can see the top disc. All of the discs turn out of the way when the key is used, releasing the shackle.

I love it when friends share what they have collected, both with locks and knowledge. 8)

Doesn't look very secure for a jail?

You could almost climb in that keyway

Very pretty though - I like the dots in place of numerals

I have seen a few other jail locks before from other collections, and they all seem to be quite large. Asked a prison guard I met once about that. He said that it to make it harder for an inmate to hide a key.

The sheet of paper says the dots tell what angle the key bittings need to be cut. You are right, the dots instead of numbers are interesting!

I have a Star lock, without a key and without the key code dots. I haven't been able to open it.

If you take a piece if 1/8-3/16" tubing, cut or grind it in half lengthwise, and overfill the half to mostly rounded with putty, you can slide it in the keyway to the bottom, then gently press it against the warding, you can at least get the spacing of the warding. Then there are only 3 possible cuts per position. It may help, though you have probably already tried that.

Have you seen a Scandinavian Jail? It's not to likely that someone would want to escape. They actually look nicer than my college apartment.
