"BEST" Door Locks and tips on picking them

I live in a dorm and I tend to accidentally lock myself out of my room ALOT . Since my roommate is in a frat he is almost never there and I have to make him get out of his way to help me out. I have lockpicks ready to go, but can't seem to be able to pick the lock for my life.

The lock is of the "BEST" brand. I can pick most doors, but this lock seems to have more pins and I think one on the bottom as well. The key looks like this:

I think the notch on the bottom is another pin but I'm not sure. All I know is that this lock is quite difficult to pick for me.

We have had other people from your school here lately asking about the BEST MX8 system that was installed. Your key is a BEST Peaks. Both are not for the novice picker, and both belong to the college, so we ask that you uphold the hobby lockpicking credo and don't pick locks that are not yours and don't pick locks that you and others rely on for safety and security. We do not wish for you to mess up your lock, or get in trouble, or lose your security deposit. "your dorm" doesn't mean your lock, it is the school's lock, and they gave you the key with the trust that you would use the key to open the door, and wouldn't do other interesting things to the lock mechanism including inserting picks, taking it apart, etc, etc.

Keep practicing and have fun, just don't practice on locks that are school property.

As for getting locked out.. we get this a lot.. "i get locked out a lot, so I'm gonna get a pick set and get in that way" umm. If you forget your key, how are you gonna always have your pick set on you? wouldn't it make more sense to have the key on you on a lanyard attached to your cell phone or something? Besides, aren't there RA's around to let people in who get locked out?

Thanks Squelchtone for the "legal" issue or what not. I didn't really think of the consequences of that. And I'll definitely read that topic.

As for the "I got locked out so I'll pick my way in", I keep picks in my bookbag and my key in my wallet and sometimes I just forget to take it or I'll not put my key back into my wallet.

Part of growing up is learning to be responsible and taking responsibility. Put the key on your keychain and put it in your pocket.

Not being responsible enough to do this is not an excuse to pick a lock that is not yours.

Keep an extra key in your bookbag with your picks, that way you will never forget your key. Also lace one on your shoelaces so that you will never loose it. Unless you like to go around barefoot of course.

Thanks guys, I realize that it's pretty irresponsible that I neglect to bring my keys. I broke my lanyard and have been too lazy to get another one. I actually have had my lockpicks with me a few times while locked out and was just wondering if I could just pick my way through. Sadly, these school locks are probably past my skill level, so I'm just gonna give up on these and try move off campus.
